Parenting & Caregiver Support

Helping families understand behavior, reduce conflict, and strengthen connection

Parenting and caregiving can be deeply meaningful, but it can also feel exhausting, confusing, and isolating. When a child’s behavior is intense, unpredictable, or affecting the entire family, it may be difficult to know how to respond.

You may find yourself trying strategy after strategy without seeing lasting change. Everyday routines may turn into repeated struggles, communication may feel strained, or you may worry that you are not giving your child the kind of support they need.

Seeking guidance does not mean you have failed as a parent or caregiver. It means you are looking for new ways to understand what is happening and help your family move forward.

Looking beneath the behavior

Behavior is often a sign that something beneath the surface needs attention. A child may be struggling with an unmet need, a lagging skill, anxiety, sensory overwhelm, emotional regulation, executive functioning, communication, or expectations that do not match their current abilities.

What appears to be defiance, avoidance, or a lack of motivation may be a child’s way of communicating that something feels too difficult or overwhelming.

Understanding what happens before, during, and after challenging moments can help families recognize patterns and respond more effectively. Rather than focusing only on stopping a behavior, support looks at what the child may be communicating and what skills, accommodations, or environmental changes could help.

Practical support for parents and caregivers

Dr. Valerie Braunstein helps parents and caregivers better understand their child’s needs while developing realistic strategies for everyday family life.

Support may include identifying patterns, strengthening communication, creating practical routines, setting appropriate expectations, reducing conflict, and responding to difficult moments with greater confidence. Dr. Val can also help caregivers support children experiencing anxiety, ADHD, autism, emotional-regulation difficulties, school-related stress, or other behavioral and developmental concerns.

The goal is not to create a perfectly behaved child or a conflict-free family. It is to help caregivers respond in ways that support connection, skill development, and the well-being of the whole family.

Collaboration with schools and care teams

Children’s needs often extend across home, school, and other areas of their lives. When helpful and appropriate, Dr. Val collaborates with teachers, school professionals, physicians, speech therapists, and other members of a child’s support system.

School consultation may include reviewing records, clarifying a student’s needs, identifying practical supports, participating in planning, and helping families communicate more effectively with school teams. This collaborative approach considers behavior, learning, attention, anxiety, sensory needs, executive functioning, and environmental factors that may be affecting a student’s experience.

By bringing together information from different settings, families and professionals can make more informed decisions about how to support the child.

You do not have to figure everything out alone

It is common for parents and caregivers to feel overwhelmed, especially when familiar approaches are no longer working. Sometimes a new perspective can help make confusing behavior feel more understandable and the next step more manageable.

If your family is experiencing frequent conflict, difficult behavior, school concerns, or uncertainty about how to support your child, Dr. Val can help you explore what may be contributing and determine an appropriate next step.
