Anxiety is a natural part of life, but sometimes worry and fear can become overwhelming. You or your child may begin avoiding certain places, activities, situations, or conversations. Everyday decisions may require constant reassurance, and things that once felt manageable can start interfering with school, work, relationships, or family life.
Anxiety can take many forms, including persistent worry, panic attacks, social anxiety, separation distress, health anxiety, school refusal, selective mutism, and specific phobias—including emetophobia. Although avoidance may bring relief in the moment, it can also make the fear feel stronger and more difficult to manage over time.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder can cause unwanted thoughts, images, or fears that feel urgent and difficult to dismiss. In response, someone may feel compelled to check, repeat, seek reassurance, avoid certain situations, or perform physical or mental rituals to reduce their distress.
Related concerns can include body-focused repetitive behaviors, such as hair pulling or skin picking. These behaviors are not simply bad habits or a lack of willpower. They can be difficult to control and may lead to frustration, embarrassment, physical discomfort, or withdrawal from everyday activities.
Dr. Valerie Braunstein provides compassionate, individualized therapy for children, adolescents, and adults experiencing anxiety, OCD, phobias, panic, and related concerns.
Depending on each person’s needs, treatment may include cognitive behavioral therapy, gradual exposure, exposure and response prevention (ERP), behavioral strategies, mindfulness, and practical coping skills. For children and adolescents, support may also include parent coaching and collaboration with schools or other professionals when helpful.
The goal is not to eliminate every uncomfortable thought or feeling. It is to help you understand the patterns keeping anxiety or compulsive behavior in place, respond to them differently, and feel more confident participating in everyday life.
Anxiety and OCD can make life feel increasingly narrow, but these patterns do not have to remain in control. With the right support, children, teens, and adults can develop new ways of responding to fear, uncertainty, and distress.
If anxiety, avoidance, intrusive thoughts, or repetitive behaviors are affecting your life or your child’s well-being, Dr. Val can help you determine an appropriate next step.
